Step 1: Check Pre-Conditions

  • Engine coolant temperature above 160°F (warm up the engine first)

  • DPF inlet temperature sensor reading properly
  • No active fault codes that block regeneration (clear any SPN 3251 FMI 0 codes first)
  • Truck parked on level ground with parking brake set
  • Adequate ventilation (exhaust temps will exceed 1,000°F)

Step 2: Connect Your Scanner

Connect your ThinkCar scanner to the truck's diagnostic port using the appropriate cable from the 13 HD Cable Bundle Kit. For most trucks, this is the 9-pin Deutsch connector located under the dash on the driver's side.

After regen completes, verify soot level has dropped below 15%. Clear any remaining DPF-related fault codes. Take the truck for a short test drive to confirm the DPF warning light has turned off and the derate has been lifted.

What To Do When Regen Won't Initiate

If your forced regen attempt fails or won't start, check these common causes:

  • Active fault codes blocking regen: Certain fault codes (like turbo underboost, EGR errors, or sensor failures) will prevent regen. Fix the underlying issue first.
  • DPF soot level too high (100%+): If soot exceeds 100%, the DPF may need to be removed and professionally cleaned (baked) or replaced. A scanner cannot regen a fully blocked filter.
  • DEF quality issues: Low DEF quality (SPN 3936) can prevent regen on some engines. Verify DEF concentration is 32.5%.
  • Exhaust leak: A leak before the DPF prevents temperatures from reaching regen threshold.
  • Failed DPF temperature sensor: If the ECM can't read DPF inlet temp, it won't allow regen. Replace the sensor.
